Yo Chuck!

It appears you very clearly do not trust facebook - of your 34 friends on your personal FB account, NONE of them are schoolboy friends, or family members, or children, or relatives. I surely don't believe you consider all your SEO buddies to be your close bosom pals, or wait, no your life cannot be that boring that your entire electronic correspondence revolves around SEO and marketing seminar drivel? You certainly do not appear to be the correct age to have been part of the early FB adopting group - the 17-21 year old crowd that fueled the explosive growth of the social network 6 years ago. If you and Piet go hit the club scene, a cougar for you would be what, a septuagenarian? And are you likely to hear Piet Loubser gloat over your drunken snog with someone 10 years your senior? No, not likely.

The issue with privacy is that the network originally espoused safety by protecting your private moments to be shared among your friends. The issue isn't even with privacy per se, but rather with the bait and switch tactics being employed. The issue is the arbitrary automatic enforcement of a public by default lack of choice.

What you industry schills need to understand is that someone needs to protect the interests of those unable to read the fine print of every change to the terms of service and Privacy policy *(which incidentally is now longer than the US Constitution).

Facebook obtained a userbase of 400 Million by telling everyone their privacy was their own to control, then pulled the rug from under them saying "oops, privacy does not exist".
